What counts as a boutique pedal?
Boutique guitar pedals are built in small batches by independent makers. They're typically hand-assembled, produced in runs of dozens or hundreds rather than thousands, and sold directly by the builder or through a small network of specialty retailers. The defining trait isn't a price point — it's the scale and ownership of the operation behind the pedal.
That covers a wide range: a single builder soldering circuits at a workbench, a two-person shop sharing PCB design and final assembly, or a tightly-held brand whose owner still answers support emails. What unites them is direct accountability — when you buy a boutique pedal, you can usually talk to the person who made it. Pedal Index is built around that fact.

How Pedal Index is different
Brands are claimed and edited by the actual makers, not scraped from third-party sources.
We don't sell pedals or take affiliate cuts. Every pedal page links directly to the builder.
Every review is scored separately on Build, Sound, Versatility, and Value — not a single vague star count.
